Why recycle your batteries and cellphones?

  • Battery recycling keeps harmful materials out of landfill - Used batteries that end up in your community’s landfill can contain toxic materials that may harm wildlife and the environment.

  • Battery recycling helps keep people and property safe - Responsible battery recycling practices ensure batteries are handled in a way that reduces potential fire hazards.

  • Battery recycling supports sustainability - Materials reclaimed from recycled batteries can be used to make new products such as silverware, pots and pans, new batteries, and even golf clubs!

Your batteries have worked hard for you—give them the chance at the second life they deserve.

What Can I recycle?

RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES

Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cordless phones, laptops, cellphones, cameras, two-way radios, biomedical equipment, etc.

SINGLE-USE BATTERIES

Single-use batteries are not reusable when they lose their charge.  They are commonly found in remote controls, car keyless entry remotes, watches, pacemakers, hearing aids, memory backup fire alarm devices, toys, etc.

CELLPHONES

Cellphones and their batteries are one of the easiest electronics to recycle.  We recommend that you remove the personal information on your phone.  In the recycling process, the memory on the phone is destroyed and reusable materials are recycled.

5 TIPS FOR SAFE AND EASY BATTERY RECYCLING

  1. Safety first! Be sure to safely prep your batteries. There are two options: bag or tape.

    • Option A: Bag each battery in its own clear plastic bag before placing it in a storage container.

    • Option B: you can tape the terminals with clear packing, non-conductive electrical or duct tape, keeping the label visible.

  2. Stay cool. Store the batteries in a cool, dry place. Incidents can occur when batteries (or the devices they power such as a cellphone or tablet) are exposed to inclement or excessively hot weather. Store them in a plastic container; avoid metal.

  3. Timing is everything. Aim to drop batteries to recycle within six months, ensuring they are bagged or taped. You can use our locator (link to map) to find the nearest drop-off site.

  4. Spread the word. As we all use batteries to power our world, share the knowledge about battery recycling. It’s the right thing to do and helps keep batteries out of landfills!
